Montpellier: an authentic gem

I don’t really know any way around it, so I’ll just go on and say it:
Montpellier is fabulous.

Porte de Peyrou
This southern French city has struck me because it knows how to be simple but special in all small details. This isn’t a city where you see the main spots and decide to leave in such a rush: even some remote corners – with no touristic or Instagram ambitions – are enchanting.

Stunning central square with bars and restaurants
What you can find in blogs and on Google, and all the “must-see,” are certainly memorable and beautiful. But there’s so much more if you just relax and get lost in the center! All the area between place de la Comédie and Porte du Peyrou is worth exploring.
The main attractions of this city include:
  • Saint-Pierre Cathedral – symbol of Montpellier
  • Place de la Comédie – the very center
  • Babote Tower
  • Saint-Clément Aqueduct
  • Promenade du Peyrou – Park with a stunning view
  • Église Saint-Roch: gotta love all those typical cafés around it
  • Jardin des plaintes Montpellier: this pretty botanical garden is managed by the University
Nice building, right? Wrong. This is a 2D giant PAINTING. Crazy, right? 😀
Places less advertized might include:
  • Quarter Antigone: a quarter with shops and local daily life, great to take a walk
  • The river Lez is marvelous
Outside of the city it’s really worth seeing:
  • Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone: just outside of the city, this beach is heaven on earth, you can swim and go pick up beautiful shells. Oh and there’s a nudist beach, so don’t go if that bothers you!
  • Cathedral in Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone
  • Castle of Flaugergues

Below, some bars seen when roaming around the center – Bars are warm and welcoming and are definitely a big plus in Montpellier!
